I have this recently released convict cousin. He had some money saved for him when he got out of prison. He decided to buy a car (without a driver's license, of course). He decided to buy a Buick sedan - with 20" rims and a stereo system that was probably put together by a 13-year-old. The wheels couldn't even turn all the way because of the over-sized rims. One of the first things I said was, "You're going to get pulled over because they'll think you're driving drunk." He paid like 3k (USD) for that POS. And he went back to dealing drugs.
I can't begin to understand. I don't think I ever will. I guess if I had to ask, I would ask 3 questions:
1) Are you where you want to be in life?
2) Is what you do daily helping to get you where you want?
3) If not, then why not try something else?
Bottom line: Don't go to prison, folks!
I have an older brother in the same situation. I think they are just addicted to the easy money and don't think well enough of themselves to want better. They gotta do better dammit.
ReplyDelete1)I'm not where I want to be in life. At least not yet, but that helps to drive me forward.
ReplyDelete2)I feel like what I do daily helps, but I understand it's a long road to success as a writer and businessperson.
3)The dislike of being stuck without money and recognition and having to be halfway across the world because of it keeps me writing.
I feel for your cousin though. I knew plenty of guys like him back home.
I heard it's tough getting out of prison because on the inside you actually learn a bunch of criminal skills and when you're released you're sent right back into the neighborhood you're arrested in so everyone knows you and all of your old criminal connections are stopping by, etc.
ReplyDeletePrison is not good!
ReplyDeleteIts just what he knows and probably the only skill that he has. It is what it easiest for him to make money. Just like NPB said, while in prison, it's hard to change mentality when you are secluded with others that do the same exact thing.
